Gone are the days of “Refer Madness” and what hopes to be the stigma that went with it. Its not just the stoners and hippies anymore. It is people from every socioeconomic background that are enjoying natures most plentiful remedy, either to unwind or cure their ailments. These days marijuana is being used as the new xanax for the stressed out mom, and the new cocktail for the older gentleman. With marijuana use so common among so many walks of life hopefully it is becoming less taboo. After all if we were to compare the effects of the chemicals in xanax and what it does to the body to that of marijuana, any logical person would agree that this mother is being more responsible by lighting up a joint, rather than popping a pill. The same goes with alcohol, I am fairly certain that pot doesn’t tear up your body the way that liquor does.
As stated in this article by The Sacramento Bee, “Forty-two percent of adults who described themselves as current users in the July poll said they smoke pot to relieve pain or treat a health condition.” While we all know that marijuana can be used for recreational purposes, the benefit it is having on the world of medicine it quite substantial. Just thinking of the physical withdrawal a person who is prescribed a narcotic painkiller, or the damage it does to your liver is enough to make any person want to explore alternatives to pain management. Marijuana is a healthy alternative, in fact I have never heard of a person overdosing on marijuana, or causing any damage to the organs in the body. Maybe a case of the munchies, but then again in a cancer patient who can’t stomach food, this is a god send.
I could state reasons till I’m blue in the face of the benefits of marijuana, but until society releases marijuana from taboo to mainstream we will still be fighting this cause. Reading this article was very promising for the future of medical marijuana, as the more mainstream it becomes, the more people realize the stereotype that marijuana is evil or harmful, is just plain untrue. Once the stigmas is gone we can begin to pass laws legalizing it around the country to benefit everyone involved.
